Leagues to continue, but bonspiels cancelled under new Covid regulations
The recent public health order has led to the cancellation of the Hog-many Bonspiel on Dec. 31 and the Pac Rim Cup, Jan. 21-23. If the order is extended beyond Jan. 31 then other club bonspiels could be cancelled. The Doubles Bonspiel is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5.
The PHO allows other club curling to continue as before, but brings in changes to the lounge when it reopens on Jan. 3. Tables will be separated by two metres and seat no more than six people. You will no longer be allowed to mingle or move between tables.
Curl BC coaching course at VCC
Curl BC is offering the club coach course at VCC on the Jan. 29-30 weekend. Successful completion of the course makes you eligible to work as a paid club coach at VCC, instructing rental groups and learn-to-curl programs. We are always looking for more coaches! VCC curlers second at Canadian senior women's championship
In recent months, Grace MacInnes (right) and Diane Gushulak (second from right) were practising at VCC in preparation for senior women's (50 years plus) competition. Grace and Diane won the BC championship in October, playing front end on the Mary-Anne Arsenault team, then topped it off with a second-place finish at the Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships, Dec. 6 -11 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The championship final against Saskatchewan can be viewed on Curling Canada's Youtube channel.
VCC curlers heading to Kamloops for BC championships
Curl BC originally postponed its championships scheduled for January due to the new Covid regulations, but has obtained an exemption that allows them to go on as planned. As a result, some VCC curlers will be heading to Kamloops, Jan. 4-9, for the BC Scotties and the BC Men's Curling Championship.
Diane Gushulak (see above) is skipping a team that includes senior teammate Grace MacInnes as an alternate. Granville Island League curler Sandra Comadina is third on the Sheila Cowan team and VCC practice members Kayla MacMillan, Sarah Loken and Kim Dennis are part of the BC Scotties field as well. Thursday Open League curler Jeff Guignard is in the BC Men's Curling Championship, as are VCC ice tech/bartender Cody Tanaka, VCC high performance coach Sterling Middleton and practice member Kelly McQuiggan. Ice and rocks revitalised over the Christmas break
VCC head ice technician Norm Scott reports that ice maintenance on the holiday break went exceptionally well, and the ice looks like it was "just installed yesterday." Norm also got out the sandpaper to work on the running edges, so expect more curl next time you play. The ice looks shiny in the picture above as it has just been flooded.
Volunteers sought for club historical archiving
The Vancouver Curling Club is looking for volunteers with experience in historical archiving, both for collecting new content and maintaining past material.
