VCC to Host 2013 Mixed Curling Championships
Curl BC is pleased to announce that the 2013 Williams Moving & Storage BC Mixed Curling Championship has been awarded to the Vancouver Curling Club. This unique event enables men and women to play together on the same team and will be held March 14 – 17, 2013.
The BC Championship will host the top eight mixed curling teams from across the province in the 2012/2013 season. Teams will compete in a triple knock-out format with a 4-team page-playoff. The winning team will advance to the 2014 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, November 14-23, 2013 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa.
The BC Mixed Curling Championship first began in 1964 and was won by the Gil Moel rink from the Trail Curling Club. This event has hosted many of BC’s and Canada’s top curlers throughout its history. 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist, Lindsay Sparkes, 2000 World Men’s Champion, Bryan Miki, 2000 World Junior Men’s Champion, Brad Kuhn, 2002 Olympic Bronze Medalists, Georgina Wheatcroft and Diane Dezura and 2009 World Senior Champions, Pat Sanders & Roselyn Craig are just a few of the event’s past winners.
The Vancouver Curling Club is located at Hillcrest Centre in the facility that hosted the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games curling competitions. With eight sheets of ice in a modern, bright and accessible building, the VCC has more than 1,100 members who participate in 20 leagues.
Established in 1912, the VCC has a history of excellence with almost 50 club teams winning provincial championships, including: 24 Men's, 7 Women's, 4 Mixed, 7 Senior Men's, 1 Senior Women's, 1 Master Men's, 1 Junior Men's, and 1 Junior Women's. The VCC is also the proud home of the Lyall Dagg team who won the MacDonald Brier and Men's World Championship in 1964.
