Team Thompson to Represent the VCC at 2016 Lower Mainland Travelers Club Championships

Decided with an undefeated record in the double elimination race between six formidable teams, the Thompson rink emerged victorious and will represent the VCC in Richmond this April, for the Lower Mainland Travelers Club Challenge and the Pacific International Cup.

Team Thompson (Skip: Aaron Thompson, Third: Jack Holmes, Second: Brian Oldham, and Lead: Mark Trowell) swept the field beating five other teams including last season's champions, Team Tully (Skip: Brock Tully, Third: Jeff Guignard, Second: Nick Kuit, Lead: Dustin Koch, and Alternate: Ron McKay).

Though undefeated, their journey was long, as they didn't receive a bye in the first round (determined by random selection) of this six team double knockout format. Their first win was over Team Bishop (Skip: Mickey Bishop. Third: Shorty Sellars, Second: Bruce Higgins, Lead: Gord Wright, and Alternate: Murray Green), a team that has proven themselves formidable opponents in the Tuesday Motors league at the VCC. Thompson's second win was over Team Brown (Skip: Barrie Brown, Third: Mark Robinson, Second: William Smith, and Lead: Craig Coyne), a resilient team with their first appearance on the Travelers scene, making it to the finals of the "B" event, but eventually succumbing to Team Tully. An impressive result nevertheless for these men, the winners of the very informal "VCC Travelers Playdowns Spirit Award" for the 2015-16 event.

In their third game, Team Thompson was able to defeat Team Tully in their first showdown against the reigning champions. Third, Jack Holmes played an impressive game, though under duress due to what was discovered later as a broken arm from an earlier slip on the ice. Talk about resilience and determination.

With Jack out of commission, but there to support his team from the Last Draw Lounge, the team brought on a spare to play lead. In a very entertaining game, the Thompson rink defeated Team Tully in the final to obtain the 2015-16 title.

In April, the Thompson rink will face-off against the province's best club teams along with several international teams at the Lower Mainland Travelers Club Challenge and the Pacific International Cup held at the Richmond Curling Club. If victorious, they will represent the VCC, and British Columbia at the Canadian Travelers Club Championship in November of 2016, held on BC soil at the Kelowna Curling Club.
