Competition Corner - December 2014
We would like to open this edition of Competition Corner by congratulating Team Schneider (Skip: Stephen Schneider, Third: Jeff Guinard, Second: Shawn Eklund, and Lead: Brent Amos) who qualified for the 2015 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship taking place February 3 – 8, 2015. Team Schneider will be headed to the Vernon Curling Club to take on the best in BC for a chance to be British Columbia’s representative at the 2015 Tim Horton’s Brier in Calgary. On the road to victory, Team Schneider took on Team Forrest (Andrew Forrest Dave Marchant, Chris Chute, and Kris Davis) in the semi-finals and the C-1 qualifying final was an all VCC affair with Team Schneider playing Team Brower (Richard Brower, Jan Bos, Cameron De Jong, and Deryk Brower).
The VCC will be represented at the Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship by Team Gushulak (Skip: Diane Gushulak, Third: Grace MacInnes, Second: Lorelle Weiss, and Lead: Sandra Comadina). Team Gushulak will be competing January 21 – 25, 2015 at the Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge, so if you are headed to the event please be sure to cheer the ladies on in their bid to represent British Columbia at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on February 14 - 20th, 2015.
The second-to-last open men’s qualifying event, which took place December 12 – 14, 2014 saw four VCC men’s team and a fifth with VCC members competing for four spots. Teams Schneider, Brower and Forrest all ended up in the C event with the three teams vying for one qualifying spot. Team Schneider defeated Team Forrest in the semi-final, with Team Brower taking on a team from the Cloverdale Curling Club on their road to the final and an eventual loss to Team Schneider. Team Cooper (Travis Cooper, Jack Holmes, Brian Enns Oldham, and Jeff Berg) went 2-3 in the event and Team Faa (Chris Faa, Leonard Firkus, Brad Blackwell, Jeff Sargent, and Keith Switzer) with a number of VCC members, finished the weekend with a 1-3 record.
December 12-14, 2014 also saw the ladies in action, with 11 teams competing for the last two qualifying spots for the BC Scotties. Team Gibson (Marilou Richter, Amy Gibson, Rebecca Turley, and Michelle Dunn) and VCC members on Team Hudyma (Lindsay Hudyma, Allison DenToom, Carman Cheng, Krista Frazee, and Shelley Birston) both competed and while each team had victories, ultimately they came up short.
We would also like to thank VCC members that provide the Club with updates on teams that are competing but who have not yet caught Competition Corner fever and aren’t updating the Club directly! If you know of any VCC teams competing in events, please email email@example.com.
