  • Competition Corner - October 2014

Welcome to Competition Corner, a new feature on our website in which we highlight achievements of VCC members in events outside of VCC bonspiels in the prior month. One of the goals of the Club's Board of Directors when planning for the move to the VCC's post-Olympic home was to support competitive curling with the hope that the VCC would once again become home to some of the best curlers in the Province.

Over the last four years we have had VCC members participate in, and win, regional, national and provincial events. At the VCC we believe it is important to celebrate not just the successes, but all our members' efforts. We established champions@vancurl.com this year so that members can let the Club know when they are playing outside the VCC.

    Affordable curling at the VCC

The VCC strives to make curling affordable for people at differing stages of life out of respect for a diverse membership that includes youth, students, people entering the workforce, people established in their careers, and retirees.

To put the cost of curling in perspective, we calculated the average cost of curling per week and compared it with other popular entertainment and fitness activities. Ready, Set, Curl - Tips for your Speed of Play

With the new season knocking at our door, we wanted to offer some tips for one of the biggest challenges for league play: game speed. Most leagues play games in two hour time slots. Strategy is often determined by expecting to play eight ends, and we want to ensure we get them all in before our time runs out. Listed below are some great tips to save time and keep the game moving.

2013-14 VCC Successes Abound at All Levels

The 2013-2104 season was a successful one for many different VCC teams and individuals who were representing the Club at competitions from Ottawa to the Comox Valley, and many places in between.

This season was a unique one for the Club because for the first time in recent memory, there were VCC teams at three different national championships. We would like to congratulate Team Switzer, Team Gibson, Team Schneider and Team Thompson for representing the Club so well on the national stage.

New Honorary Life Member and 2014 AGM Wrap-up

Thank you to all Club members who attended the 2014 Annual General Meeting on June 4. Everyone's comments and feedback during the meeting were appreciated as members' opinions and participation are vital for a membership-driven organization like ours to thrive and succeed.

A very special thank you to our outgoing Board members for their dedication over the past few years. The following members gave very generously of their time and professional skill sets over the past three years (and in some cases more) to help the VCC get settled into our new facility at Hillcrest Centre:
Scott Allen   Keith Budd   Kathy McInnes   Duncan Shearman   Wayne Sutherland

Kathy McInnes - Honorary Life Member

Additional kudos are extended to Kathy McInnes for being elected by the membership as an Honorary Life Member. Kathy’s contributions to the Club and the sport of curling during her tenure are endless but some of her key achievements include: serving multiple terms on the Board, including one year as President and three as Secretary; helping run and coordinate two different leagues for many years; playing a leading role with many of the Club’s special events for more than two decades; working with a small group of others to help preserve and document the Club’s rich history; volunteering with the 2009 World Junior and Wheelchair Curling Championships as well as the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games; and much more. Congratulations Kathy, and thank you for everything you have done and will continue to give to the Club.

Two other individuals were also honoured at the 2014 AGM; Jen Lucas and Jason Tusor were named the female and male volunteers of the year. Their respective contributions from March 2013 to February 2014 were quite impressive and extensive. Thank you to both of them for giving so freely of their time and contributing positively to the VCC.

LtoR: Jason Tusor, Mark Robinson, Jen Lucas

Lastly, congratulations to the new Board members who were elected during the AGM. Please click here to view the Club's Board of Directors for the 2014-2015 season.
