The 2013-2104 season was a successful one for many different VCC teams and individuals who were representing the Club at competitions from Ottawa to the Comox Valley, and many places in between.
This season was a unique one for the Club because for the first time in recent memory, there were VCC teams at three different national championships. We would like to congratulate Team Switzer, Team Gibson, Team Schneider and Team Thompson for representing the Club so well on the national stage.
Thank you to all Club members who attended the 2014 Annual General Meeting on June 4. Everyone's comments and feedback during the meeting were appreciated as members' opinions and participation are vital for a membership-driven organization like ours to thrive and succeed.
A very special thank you to our outgoing Board members for their dedication over the past few years. The following members gave very generously of their time and professional skill sets over the past three years (and in some cases more) to help the VCC get settled into our new facility at Hillcrest Centre:
Additional kudos are extended to Kathy McInnes for being elected by the membership as an Honorary Life Member. Kathy’s contributions to the Club and the sport of curling during her tenure are endless but some of her key achievements include: serving multiple terms on the Board, including one year as President and three as Secretary; helping run and coordinate two different leagues for many years; playing a leading role with many of the Club’s special events for more than two decades; working with a small group of others to help preserve and document the Club’s rich history; volunteering with the 2009 World Junior and Wheelchair Curling Championships as well as the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games; and much more. Congratulations Kathy, and thank you for everything you have done and will continue to give to the Club.
Two other individuals were also honoured at the 2014 AGM; Jen Lucas and Jason Tusor were named the female and male volunteers of the year. Their respective contributions from March 2013 to February 2014 were quite impressive and extensive. Thank you to both of them for giving so freely of their time and contributing positively to the VCC.
Lastly, congratulations to the new Board members who were elected during the AGM. Please click here to view the Club's Board of Directors for the 2014-2015 season.
The VCC's Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 4 from 7pm to 9pm and is open to all VCC members to attend. Our AGM is an important activity for our member-run organization. It provides the Board an opportunity to summarize its activities for the year, and it also gives members a chance to voice their feedback. In addition, a number of positions on the Club’s Board of Directors are up for election at each AGM. To learn more, please click here.
Did you volunteer at the Club last season? The annual VCC Volunteer BBQ will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on June 4 (before the AGM). All volunteers of the 2013-2014 season are invited to come down and enjoy a drink and BBQ meal and socialize with other members. Please RSVP to Christopher via email firstname.lastname@example.org

The season-ending VCC Championships have come to a close and Team Ordog from the Pacific Rim Curling League are the 2014 Club Champions.
This year's edition of the annual event saw 19 of the Club's 20 leagues - each with their own unique and diverse membership - come together to compete for the ultimate Club prize. On Thursday evening, the final four battled it out in the A and B finals.
Team Ordog members featured on the right are (L to R): skip Christopher Ordog, third Scott Robertson, second Greg Ohashi and lead Logan Chinski.
In the A final, Team Ordog captured the crown of VCC Club Champions by defeating Thursday Open (1) in a tie-breaker extra end. The game was back and forth throughout, with the final result hinging on the game's final shot.
One sheet over, the B final featured Team Carpenter (Thursday Open 3) and Team McKenzie (Shamrock 2), with the latter becoming the VCC 2014 Club Championship B Winners.
Pictured on the left, Team McKenzie are (L to R): second Kris Wright, lead Kevin Leask, third Rob Goble and skip Jerry McKenzie.

A big thank you to all our members in each of our leagues for an amazing 2013-14 season. Great curling everyone!
Two VCC teams competed in Richmond over the weekend at the Dominion Mainland Club Challenge. Team Schneider and Team Birston took aim at qualifying for the provincial event that begins this Wednesday. Team Schneider finished at 2-2 and did not qualify out of their pool.
However, Team Birston managed to force a tie-breaker with Team Richmond by finishing at 3-1 in their pool. Team Birston was victorious in the tie-breaker and went on to win the semi-final against Golden Ears. The win secured a spot at provincials! We wish them good luck and good curling!
Read more about how Team Birston came together in the Vancouver Courier article: Birston PICS her spot with new team.
For the third consecutive year in a row, the Vancouver Curling Club's Team Schneider solidified their hold as the undisputed Canadian Gay Curling Champions.
During the intense all-Vancouver re-match, Team Schneider (Skip Stephen Schneider, Third Shawn Eklund, Second Shelley Birston and Lead Glenn Smith) came out on top against long-time rivals Team Thompson (Skip Aaron Thompson, Third Jack Holmes, Second Brian Oldham and Lead Mark Trowell). Both teams are long-time members of the VCC and the Pacific Rim Curling League.
This year's event (which also included the Icebreaker Bonspiel) was hosted by Edmonton's Curling With Pride at the Granite Curling Club, where the inaugural CGCC was held in 2005 with Thompson taking the very first CGCC title.
We are extremely proud of the skill level displayed at the gay National level by our VCC teams. Congrats Team Schneider for a well-earned three-peat!
It is with heavy hearts that the Vancouver Curling Club staff and Board of Directors announce the passing of our much admired Honorary Life Member and two time Past President Ron Avery.
VCC members are invited to share wine, friendship and anecdotes at a celebration of Ron's life to be hosted by his family at the Marine Room of the West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre at 20th and Marine Drive on Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m.
Ron’s legacy with the VCC will be discussed at length in the May edition of The Backline.
On Saturday, April 5, the VCC Member ‘Bring-a-Friend’ Day will be happening out on the ice. Bring along a friend (or two!) interested in trying out curling for the first time. All they need to bring are clean (indoor) running shoes and a few layers of warm clothes. Experienced coaches will be out on the ice to help demonstrate the sport.
Are you curious about the other types of leagues at the Vancouver Curling Club? The VCC has more than 20 different leagues that vary in the format and time they run each week, to gender and age mix, social events and prizes.
Come meet league reps and ask questions during the ‘Meet The Leagues’ event, also on April 5. There will be complimentary food/snacks and a FREE raffle for a brand-new Fibrelite broom!
- Bring a Friend Day: 10-4pm | Ice shed
- Meet the Leagues: 12-2pm | Last Draw Lounge
Click here for more info about both events. See you at the Club on April 5!
The VCC offers members the opportunity to recognize another member who has made a significant impact on the Club through volunteering or other resources. The Club’s Honourary Life Members and Volunteer of the Year are individuals we recognize for their important contributions.
Our Honourary Life Member Sub-Committee reviews all applications and makes a recommendation through the Board for a vote by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June. The recommendations are then voted on by the members in attendance.
For Volunteer of the Year, the Special Events Committee reviews all written submissions and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors, who have final approval. The chosen volunteer(s) will also be honoured at the AGM.
If you know of a member (or members) deserving of these honours at the VCC, forward their name and a summary of their contributions to email@example.com by Tuesday, April 15, 2014. (*Indicate either HLM or VotY in the subject heading.)
